Bulgaria is the biggest supplier of medicinal herbs within Europe. There are around 250 different species that grow naturally in the country, of this range about 50 can be sourced year round from different collectors.

In this relatively small country are concentrated a very rich variety of reliefs such as lowlands, plains, hills, gorges, plateaus, mountains. Herbs are usually hand collected from the mountains at altitudes ranging from 600 to 2’500 m. Mountains constitute about 25% of the territory.

The regions where the herbs are collected are ecologically clean. This is a result of the very low economic activity outside the cities and a very low population density of 35 people per square kilometre outside the cities.

Bulgaria lies on the border line of the continental and Mediterranean climatic zones. The air masses are channelled through mountains and valleys creating sharp contrast in weather and regions with microclimates such as the famous valley of roses.

The combination of these factors and richness of the soils contribute to Bulgaria's exceptional biodiversity and outstanding features of its herbs.
